Beatrice Cubitt-President

Hello, I am Beatrice Cubitt, and I am running for President of PYSL.  I have a love and knowledge of soccer that was initially gained from watching English Premier League with my father.  There is nothing I enjoy more than watching our children’s teams learn to play the beautiful game, or to see players perfect their pass, tackle, “move”, or score their first goal.

My twins joined PYSL about seven years ago after playing in the Poway Thanksgiving Tournament and watching the PYSL All-Star teams.  I was struck by the dedication of the coaching staff, and family friendly attitude of the club. What was true then, and continues to be true today, is a belief in the development of superior teamwork, skills and fair play, over physical size and brute force.  Importantly the club remains committed to the long-term development of our children’s soccer skills and their enjoyment of the game.  My two children are still playing soccer as Poway Vaqueros in the BU17 and GU17 teams, and between them have played at most levels from AA-C to Premier.

Since joining the club I have volunteered in a number of roles: I have served as a team manger for both of my children’s teams, and I co-developed the PYSL website with another team manager, Jerry Sims, in 2004 and maintained the site for a couple of years before the club upgraded to the current improved site.  For the last three years I have served on the PYSL board as the VP of Competitive of soccer. In this role I worked actively with the directors of coaching, the board of directors, coaches, managers, and our club registrar, Ginger Couvrette, as part of a team responsible for promoting the clubs growth and the development of Vaqueros program and the competitive teams.

My approach emphasizes fairness, common sense and open communication.  I would like to serve the club as President and be part of a team helping with the next phase of the clubs growth in quality, improvement of our facilities, and encouraging more interaction between the recreational and competitive areas of our league and club.

Susan Gill-Treasurer

Hello, my name is Susan Gill and I am running for Treasurer of Poway Youth Soccer League (PYSL).  I live in Poway with my husband Steve and three boys, Steven (12), Edward (6) and Joshua (3).  Until moving to Poway in April, 2008, I served as the Director of Corporate Finance of a timberland and agricultural investment management firm located in Boston, Massachusetts, having been employed there for twelve years.  Living in Westwood, Massachusetts until 2008, I served on the board of the Westwood Youth Soccer for six years in many capacities, most recently as Treasurer.  Over the past twelve months, I was appointed to the PYSL board as Assistant Treasurer to learn about the PYSL organization and assist the current Treasurer as needed.  I believe that I have the appropriate background and experience to enable me to successfully serve as Treasurer for PYSL.

Pam Bickel-Secretary

Pam Bickel, mother of one 8th grade son and long-time PYSL parent.  During my time with PYSL I have served as chairperson for PYSL Opening Day, have worked on the Poway Country Shoot-out committee and have been uniform co-coordinator.  Outside of soccer I have served on several local PTA and Foundations boards as well as being chairperson for various school fundraisers. I enjoy being part of the PSYL organization and will continue to work to improve our club giving our kids the best place to play soccer.

Martin Armstrong-VP Competitive

I’m Martin Armstrong, married to Sue, with 2 daughters, Kate and Emily, both of whom play for Poway Vaqueros, GU15 and GU13. We are a soccer loving family. I grew up in England playing the game to semi professional level at University, before recurring knee problems ended my career prematurely. I’ve subsequently coached youth soccer in England, South Africa and, since moving to Poway 4 years ago, various recreational and indoor teams within PYSL. For the past few years I’ve also been a volunteer for both the league and Poway High School Girls’ Soccer program, currently Operations director for PYSL, and Treasurer for PHS Girls Soccer.

I believe I can do a very good job as VP Competitive, firstly because I have a thorough understanding of the game, and what is required to develop players’ abilities, and the clubs they play for. Secondly, my involvement with both PYSL and PHS Girls Soccer gives me a solid base of understanding and applying the administrative requirements of the role. Finally, I have over 20 year’s commercial experience, which, among other things, has taught me the benefits of teamwork, concentrating on what’s important, and simple hard work.

I hope you will vote for me as VP Competitive this year, and look forward to a very exciting year ahead. I can be contacted at Armstrong05@cox.net or phone 858 842 1911.
